Bungalow Conversion

Old Portland/Bungalows: One of the challenges faced with the ownership of these homes is often the upstairs. Typically an area with a converted attic space used to house one or more bedrooms. Charming, yet often times a space that is awkward and uninviting.

With these awkward make do areas, there is often issues with how to make the space work for growing family needs, as well as the dream of a master suite.... something, that was not typically part of the original construction or make of these homes. Often times these converted attic spaces are filled with make shift walls separating spaces in an attempt to create bedrooms, half baths, and play rooms. You may even have a chimney stack that once supported an old woodstove, wood burning oven, hot water heater or flu of some sort.

However, even with these challenges and quirks, there is plenty that can be done and for that matter, an amazing opportunity to add another element of charm and capitalize on great square footage.

The Skidmore Project was faced with a hand full of challenges that aligned with these quirks and characteristic obstacles. But, knowing better, we saw nothing less than an opportunity to transform a once “make do” space into a Master Suite. One that would not only serve the current needs of our client, but one that would allow for a timeless approach to complimenting the original craftsmanship of the home allowing for growth.
